A system that sat idle since March gets tested, not guessed at
A heat pump or furnace that hasn't run since the last cold snap doesn't announce what's wrong with it the way a system running daily would. So a heating call starts with the same discipline as an AC call: the control board gets tested, the igniter or heat strips get checked under load, and on a heat pump the reversing valve gets watched actually reverse. On a mini split system the same readings apply to the indoor and outdoor units both. Emergency service runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through the handful of cold snaps Montgomery County gets each winter.
Book it before the cold snap, not during it
Every winter tune up ahead of the season is $75, which is meaningfully less than an emergency call after the first freeze finds the fault for you. Military, first responders and teachers get 10% off. Named technicians, not a rotating crew, run these calls, so the person testing your control board in December is the same one who might have been on your AC in July.

A furnace that goes untested from March to November is the single most common reason a heating system fails on exactly the night it's needed most: a cracked heat exchanger, a corroded igniter or a stuck reversing valve doesn't show up until the thermostat finally asks the system to work. A $75 tune up booked in the fall catches most of that before it becomes a Tuesday night no heat call. Residential club members also get priority scheduling on emergency calls, ahead of anyone who isn't a member yet.
